Black Lives Matter; from a moment to a movement
SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPLEMENTING REAL CHANGE

TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Stop talking and start listening to Black Asian & Minority Ethnic (BAME) voices

  • Don’t be afraid to ask when you do not know — but do the work first - do your own research

  • Those in leadership positions should take personal accountability for calling out discrimination against your BAME colleagues

  • Performative allyship is not helpful - there is no substitute for doing the actual work

  • Enthusiastically embrace racial issues and be explicit in your support of racial issues

GATHER DATA

  • Assess the demographics of your current workforce and put in place measures to address any imbalances

  • Analyse and report on ethnicity pay gap to shine a light on race / ethnicity based inequality and then address any imbalances

EXAMINE RECRUITMENT & PROGRESSION

  • Examine all stages of the employment and retention process, look at how individuals are shortlisted, recruited and how they are supported to progress

CHANGE PROCESSES

  • Foster inclusive and safe spaces for Black, Asian and minority Groups within the organisation share their concerns

  • Implement clear mechanisms for responding to and resolving microaggressions, unconscious bias and discrimination against BAME colleagues

  • Set targets for improving BAME representation within your workplace, be transparent about your progress and be accountable for delivering them

  • Provide mentoring and establish inclusive networks to support the advancement of BAME colleagues through training and peer mentoring

  • Diversify your supply chain, the consultant teams you work with and those you collaborate with
